Help support a UC Berkeley SAGE (Student Achievement Guided by Experience) Scholars student gain knowledge in their field of study through a paid internship. The SAGE Scholars Program was created in 1999 by the UC Office of the President to complement the UC Outreach Program. During 2000/01, the program was launched at UC Berkeley and UC Irvine, and will eventually expand to all UC campuses. Details of the program and its participants are available by following this link: http://sagescholars.berkeley.edu.

About the Program
Through the SAGE Scholars Program, companies offer paid internships to talented and highly motivated UC Berkeley students related to their field of study. Through these internships, companies provide invaluable real world business experience and training to students, as well as strong mentoring. In addition, SAGE Scholars participate in Career Development coursework given by professionals in industry to enhance the SAGE Scholars business and leadership skills. Corporate sponsors also contribute to a fund that covers educational costs for all interns. The program targets students with financial need who can greatly benefit from the program's unique combination of financial support, work experience and mentoring.

Companies participating in the program establish paid internships for UC Berkeley students. During the internships, SAGE Scholars work full-time during the summer and part-time during the academic year. Companies pay students a competitive wage for actual hours worked. Prior to starting their internships, all SAGE Scholars must enroll in a course at UC Berkeley specifically designed to enhance their business and internship experience. Coursework includes topics such as effective communication techniques, career development, and leadership skills. The program is available to students of all majors. Students must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA and qualify for substantial financial aid. Current sponsors include Berlex Biosciences, Roche Molecular, Calimetrics, Union Bank, Merrill Lynch, among many others.

Financial Support
Each company participating in the SAGE Scholars Program makes an annual contribution for each intern selected by the sponsor. The 2001/02 annual contribution to support each intern is $6500. The SAGE Scholars Fund supports each intern in the form of a financial award directed to the student's educational cost, with a small percentage directed to programmatic costs directly benefiting SAGE Scholars (i.e., student workshops, speaker seminars, etc.). Note that the SAGE Scholars Fund will not cover internship costs; these costs are borne by each sponsoring business. Contributions to the SAGE Scholars Fund are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by federal and state laws.
