Finding the right employee for a given position can be challenging.
Sorting through a multitude of resumes, interviewing candidates who
aren’t well-suited for a job, or hiring employees that end up not being
right for the company or expected task can be time-consuming and
costly. Similar challenges also apply to those seeking work. To avoid
the potential pitfalls of the fine art of hiring, many companies enlist
a firm like AppleOne at 4825 Hopyard Road, a staffing agency that can
put thousands of pre-qualified direct-hire, temporary, and temp-to-hire
employees at their fingertips.
“We’re the largest privately held full-service staffing provider in
North America,” says Michele Henderson, area manager for AppleOne’s
Fremont and Pleasanton branches. “We specialize in clerical, general
office, customer service, accounts payable, accounts receivable, office
management, data entry, filing, and just about every other position in
the clerical field. We also handle higher-end accounting and technical
placement through specialized divisions devoted to those areas of
expertise.”
AppleOne was founded in Glendale, California in 1964 by Bernie Howroyd.
By 1987, AppleOne had grown to become a $100 million company.
AppleOne’s first office outside the U.S. opened in 1989 in Ontario,
Canada. In 1994, the company underwent a dramatic expansion, opening 19
new offices. Currently, the company has 1,267 employees companywide and
nearly 300 offices. In the Bay Area, AppleOne has facilities in
Pleasanton, Walnut Creek, San Francisco, San Mateo, Novato, Fremont,
San Jose, Santa Clara, and Oakland. AppleOne’s office in Hacienda
opened in September of 2004 and currently has six employees.
AppleOne is proud of the fact that it fully embraces technology and all
the benefits it has to offer. In fact, the company began using
computers to place workers back in 1991. “We have probably some of the
best technology in the industry for being able to find and keep track
of job candidates and their skills,” Henderson says. “For example, our
system keeps track of the scores candidates achieve on tests relating
to using office software and typing, as well as whether or not a
candidate is bilingual and their job history. It helps us to perform a
faster, more in-depth search to find a candidate for a client and vice
versa.”
All AppleOne offices are equipped with the company’s AppLearn
evaluation and testing system. AppLearn allows AppleOne to test,
evaluate, and train temporary and direct-hire personnel on most common
computer programs. In addition, AppleOne has the ability to update its
AppLearn system to accommodate a client’s specific software. This
feature is intended to allow AppleOne to test and screen for a
company’s exact needs. In addition to AppleOne's computer evaluation
process, an account executive conducts a pre-employment screening.
In-depth interviews, injury and illness prevention programs, and
reference checks all play major roles in ensuring quality. AppleOne
also verifies candidates’ employment histories, performs criminal
background and social security checks, and can provide DMV
verifications on an as-needed basis.
“Our objective is to make hiring employees or finding work a seamless
process,” Henderson says. “Our mission is to find, understand, and
fulfill the needs of our clients and candidates. Our objective is to
have every candidate walk through the door and get a job. We know
that’s a lofty goal, but we make every attempt to fulfill it, making
job placement more cost effective for employees and employers.”
