Odyssey of the Mind is a unique international academic program for students from kindergarten through college that teaches cognitive skills, creative problem solving, and teamwork through team competition.  Thousands of students throughout the country participate in this extra-curricular event.

Local Award Recipients
On March 27th, the 5th grade team A from Lydiksen Elementary School in Pleasanton was awarded 1st place in the California State competition, held at the UC Davis campus.  This victory earns them the right to represent Pleasanton, Alameda County, and the State of California in the 1999 Odyssey of the Mind World Finals, to be held at The University of Tennessee, in Knoxville from May 26-30.  Our local students will compete with winners of Odyssey of the Mind competitions from all 50 states and 38 countries.

Program Description
Students participating in the program solve problems in a variety of areas - from building mechanical devices such as spring-driven vehicles to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics.  Adult assistance is strictly forbidden, so students rely on one another, learning skills in teamwork, evaluating ideas, making decisions, and creating solutions while also developing self-confidence from their experiences.  The Odyssey of the Mind Association also develops activities to integrate these skills into regular classroom curricula.  Students begin preparing each Fall for their competition in Regional, State and Country association finals.  The Odyssey of the Mind World Finals is the culmination of this effort for those that advance.

Contributions Sought
The students are now focused on fundraising for their travel expenses to Tennessee.  Funding for the trip rests on the shoulders of the seven team members, ranging in age from ten to eleven.  Teams are responsible for their own airfare, lodging, food and prop transportation.  They would welcome your generous contribution.  A non-profit tax Identification Number for contributions is available upon request.
