The Pleasanton Public Library will launch its Big Read program in celebration of F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby" on Sunday, September 7th with the Big Read Kickoff Extravaganza. Other special events have been scheduled throughout the community during September and October 2008.

Gatsby's In Town
Members of the community are invited to help celebrate The Great Gatsby as part of the Pleasanton Public Library's Big Read Events. Pleasanton is one of over 100 communities nationwide participating in the 2008 Big Read, and a wide variety of fun-filled events centering around The Great Gatsby have been planned in Pleasanton throughout September and October. Events include roaring twenties' jazz, mystery dinners, theatrical productions, classic films, a San Francisco speakeasy tour, book discussions, and A Jazzy Speakeasy Party to conclude the celebration on Saturday, October 25th. Everyone in Pleasanton is invited to participate in this city wide promotion of literature.

Federal Grant
The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest and is designed to restore reading to the center of American culture. The Pleasanton Public Library will receive a Big Read grant to promote and carry out community-based reading program, and Pleasanton was chosen as just one of 126 communities across the country to participate in the program.
