SPECIAL OLYMPICS FLAME OF HOPE
More than 500 law enforcement personnel from federal, military, state, county and local agencies will be running the Special Olympics' Flame of Hope through Northern California from June 14th through June 25th. The event is part of the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run, a year-round fundraising campaign that will culminate at the Special Olympics Northern California Summer Games being held at UC Davis on June 25th, 26th and 27th.
East Bay Torch Run
The Law Enforcement Torch Run has become the single largest supporter of Special Olympics Northern California, a free year-round sports program that serves almost 14,000 children and adults with developmental disabilities. The torch will be in the East Bay on Tuesday, June 22nd where it will start its 27 mile leg at 6:30 am in Newark before traveling to Fremont, Union City, Hayward, and briefly stopping in Castro Valley. It starts up again and travels to San Leandro BART, where it takes a brief BART ride to Oakland and Jack London Square. The journey continues on Wednesday, June 23rd as the Flame of Hope leaves Oakland and travels 25 miles north along the San Pablo Avenue corridor to Emeryville, Berkeley, Albany, El Cerrito, Richmond and Pinole, stopping briefly in Hercules at the Marina. The torch starts up again later in the day at the Martinez Waterfront, where the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office will take it via boat to Benicia.
