Since 1967, Belden Consulting Engineers has offered its customers full-service electrical, mechanical, and plumbing engineering. "We provide an on-time, quality product," says Kevin Moore, who has been with the company for 42 of its 52 years. "We have a long list of repeat clients that we have worked with over the years."

Architects design the outer shell and interior layouts of new buildings. As a result, some people outside of the industry may not understand the key role that engineering firms such as Belden play in new construction and remodels. Belden makes buildings work by adding the electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems critical to a building's function. That entails adding lighting, power, voice, data, and security systems as well as plumbing, heating, cooling, and ventilation systems, depending on a client's requirements.

Belden's engineers are registered in several states outside of California and capable of designing projects to meet the requirements of California Title 24 Compliance, LEED Certification, and other needs. In terms of consulting, for example, the firm's services include code studies, lighting design, energy studies, due diligence reports, and peer reviews.

"We do more than commercial work," notes Moore. "Some of our largest projects lately have been multi-family residential projects and some large shopping centers. We also do engineering for offices, healthcare, industrial, site studies, and peer reviews, as well as design out-of-state projects to meet the local energy codes."

Over the years Belden Consulting Engineers has provided a host of services on many projects in California. The firm provided mechanical, plumbing, and electrical engineering services for Livermore's San Francisco Premium Outlets, the state's largest outdoor shopping center, for example. The firm has also worked on school projects that include the Dublin and Pleasanton school districts and on fire stations throughout the state.

The firm's residential work has included senior residential, high-density multi-family housing, apartments, townhouses, and custom single family projects. For public and nonprofit clients, Belden has worked on projects that include parks and recreation, churches, city and county buildings, airports, museums, libraries, and emergency operations centers. The firm's industrial work has included pump stations, ports, piers, laboratories, and computer facilities.

Belden was founded in Alameda by Jerry Belden as Belden Incorporated, Electrical Engineers. It eventually moved to a former gas station in San Leandro and grew several times over. In 1997 the company became Belden Consulting Engineers and an employee-owned company. More than 20 employees work at Belden, which moved to Hacienda in 2014. "We were looking for a more modern, centrally located, and somewhat smaller space," says Moore. "This has worked out just right."
