Providence Medical Technology Pioneers Cervical Spine Surgery Solutions

Providence Medical Technology, Inc. is a privately-held medical device company focused on innovative and tissue-sparing surgical solutions for spine surgery of the neck. More than 11,000 surgical cases have been performed using Providence instruments and implants. The company's purpose is to improve clinical outcomes for high-risk patients and prevent surgical failures. Its mission is to establish Circumferential Cervical Fusion as the standard of care for patients with common risk factors that can interfere with proper healing.

"Providence has pioneered a proprietary, less-invasive approach to posterior fusion of the neck and has developed surgical instrumentation and implants that address the unmet clinical needs of, and offer unique benefits to, the worldwide cervical spine market," says Michael Miller, Director of Marketing, who has been with the company since 2014. "Extensive clinical evidence shows that cervical fusion patients with one or more risk factors like diabetes, osteoporosis, nicotine use, and multi-level disease experience much higher rates of complications and surgical failures. We believe high-risk cervical fusion patients deserve more and have developed a new technology designed to improve surgical outcomes."

In June, the company announced enrollment had begun in a human clinical Investigational Device Exemption (IDE). The clinical study will evaluate Providence's Posterior Cervical Stabilization System (PCSS) in patients with three-level degenerative disc disease. PCSS is a unique surgical device system consisting of a small, titanium-alloy surgical implant with two integrated bone screws intended to stabilize the spine. The study's goal is to demonstrate that a combination of anterior and posterior fusion achieves superior clinical outcomes compared to anterior fusion alone for such patients.

Providence moved to Hacienda in January 2016 after the company had outgrown its previous office. "We wanted a location that would support our continued growth and business needs," notes Miller. "The Hacienda location is convenient and has the right space and amenities for hosting VIP meetings and training events."

The Hacienda office is Providence Medical Technology's headquarters and only business location. About half of its approximately 50 employees work out of the Hacienda office, while the rest are field-based employees who work directly with spine surgeons and assist with surgical cases. The company's community efforts have included supporting the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano counties.
