Hacienda Sponsors Amateur Photo Contest

Spring is here! The hillsides are green. And there’s no better time to take pictures and show off our beautiful valley.

As a springtime inducement to Tri-Valley shutter bugs, Hacienda Business Park is sponsoring a photography contest. The contest is open to all amateur photographers residing in the Tri-Valley or East Bay.

“The Hacienda Photo Contest will give an opportunity to residents and students to get to know our park a little better, and to stretch their artistic and creative capabilities,” says George Kallis of Callahan-Pentz Properties, co-developer of Hacienda Business Park with The Prudential Insurance Company of America. “The contest will also give Hacienda an opportunity to promote and utilize the talents of local amateur photographers for some of our photo needs.”

A total of $700 in cash and prizes will be awarded in three subject categories in each of two divisions. Subject categories to be judged include architecture, landscape and people. All photographs must be taken at, or of, Hacienda Business Park in north Pleasanton.

There will be one division for Tri-Valley high school students, and a second division for local residents and college students. The top photographs in each category and in each division will be awarded $50 for first place, $30 for second, $15 for third, and $5 for honorable mention. One photograph will be judged "best of contest" and its owner will receive a new Vivitar 70-210 mm from The Photo Shop in Dublin.

Photographs will be evaluated by a four-member panel that includes: Mike Macor, chief photographer of The Valley Time; Gordon Clark, director of photography of The Tri-Valley Herald; Lilly Ault, editor of Pleasanton Pathways; and David Stubbs, staff photographer of Sunset Magazine.

Only 8" x 10" color or black and white prints will be accepted, and all prints must be mounted. Contestants may enter as often as they like, but each photograph must be accompanied by a separate entry form.

Entry forms already have been sent to all Tri-Valley high school photo classes and southern Alameda County college photo instructors. Additional entries are available at: The Photo Shop in Dublin (7029 Regional Street, in Mervyn’s/Payless Center), Photo Spectrum in San Ramon (12145 Alcosta Boulevard, Country Faire Center) and at Pleasanton Pathways (4637 Chabot Drive, Suite 105, in Hacienda’s Chabot Center Building)

The deadline for the contest is May 3, with entries due at the offices of Research & Decisions in Hacienda Business Park.

An awards ceremony is scheduled for May 9, 6:30 pm, at Hacienda’s community room in Chabot Center. Photographs will be returned to contestants after being displayed for public viewing in the Pleasanton Library on Black Avenue.

Contestants with technical questions on photographing architecture, landscape and people are welcome to stop by The Photo Shop for free advice. “We’d be happy to answer any questions concerning film, exposure, lens selection or any other aspect of photography,” says Ray Hunt, manager of The Photo Shop.
