Millie and Severson: Building a Higher Standard Since 1945

Since its founding in 1945, Millie and Severson has been part of building California. The local, employee-owned company constructs projects that enhance communities where they both live and work. Through its projects, the company has built office buildings, industrial warehouses, medical facilities, schools, religious places of worship, parking structures, hospitality venues, and more.

Working with Millie and Severson means working with a California-only general contractor, not the satellite office of a large national firm. Every one of its employees is passionate about constructing the highest quality buildings for the benefit of their fellow California citizens. Currently the company is constructing a 1.7-million square foot, 10-building industrial campus for Overton Moore Properties in Fremont. The project is the largest industrial project in the Bay Area, according to Bob Wissmann, Division President, Northern California.

"As builders, our goal is to develop lasting relationships by consistently exceeding our customers' expectations," says Wissmann. "Our employee-ownership structure assures that every one of our professionals is personally invested in the success of our clients' projects. As employee-owners, we take pride in our ability to provide exceptional service in an honest, hard-working environment."

That exceptional service is easy to find. Many of the company's developer clients, for example, face challenging deadlines for getting their construction projects completed so that tenants may move in as soon as possible. Millie and Severson can help their clients meet that challenge.

"On a recent project we were able to get a major tenant in early by accelerated release of select trades, ordering of long-lead items, and phased delivery of the space," notes Wissmann. "The tenant improvements totaled over 500,000 square feet, and our client would have incurred significant penalties if the tenant wasn't in on time. Working as a team, we delivered on time - enabling the tenant to be fully operational and our client very happy."

Outsiders may be surprised to learn that Millie and Severson is still a family business. The company's President and Chairman, Jon Severson, is the son of one of the company founders. Two of his sons serve as the Chief Financial Officer and VP of Operations, respectively, extending the company into its third generation of family leadership.

Millie and Severson has been a Pleasanton business since the company expanded to Northern California four years ago. With the growth of its business year after year, the company had outgrown its original office space but wanted to remain in Pleasanton due to its central location, easy access to clients and projects, and convenient commute for staff. The company moved its office, which has 20 employees, to Hacienda in March 2019. The Hacienda office is the third office in California for Millie and Severson, with the other two in Southern California where the company was founded.

"This office serves the needs of our Northern California clients, many of whom we've served in other parts of the state," says Wissmann. "With the development boom happening in this region, it was a perfect time for us to expand our offerings in this area."

Millie and Severson supports several groups and efforts in the area. They include the Discovery Counseling Center, which provides comprehensive, affordable, and accessible mental healthcare services to family and children. The company also supports the Pacific Autism Center for Education, which provides education and care for children and adults with autism/developmental disabilities and their families.
