the Bringing Back the Natives Garden Tour
Take advantage of this opportunity to shop for unique or hard-to-find native plants that are not normally available in most nurseries.
This shopping extravaganza will offer native plant fans a good selection of native plants and provide a more relaxed and less crowded shopping experience than one normally finds at native plant sales. Knowledgeable staff will be on hand to help shoppers select the right plants for their gardens. You do not have to register in order to shop at these nurseries. Directions to nurseries can be found below, or use Google maps. (Note that Google and Yahoo directions are not correct for Annie’s Annuals and Perennials; use the directions below.)
For information on how to successfully plant natives, please see Yerba Buena Nursery’s excellent Transplant Guide.

Talks in the Nursery:
12:00-1:00 “12:00 – 1:00 “Choosing natives that benefit pollinators”” by Jeff Bridge
Ploughshares Nursery Manager Jeff Bridge will discuss which native plants best serve our native bees, hummingbirds and butterflies and why choosing natives to feed pollinator populations is better than choosing non-natives.
11:00-12:00 “Choosing the Best California Native Plants for Attracting Butterflies to your Garden” by Laura Hanson
Learn which California native plants will bring butterflies to your garden. Imagine sitting in your garden in the summer time with a flurry of butterflies and other pollinators aflutter. Laura Hanson, co-owner of The Watershed Nursery will help you bring that dream to fruition. She will focus on the species that draw the greatest abundance and diversity of pretty pollinators. Samples of these plants will be shown either in containers or in Nursery’s garden. She will also weave into the talk information on the greater ecology of plants and their pollinators.
11:00–4:00 (running continuously) “How to replace your lawn with natives the cheap and easy way, and get paid for it, too!—includes handouts” by San Lorenzo High students, Steve Wiley, Sandra Nevala-Lee of Green Thumb Works, and a representative from EBMUD
12:00 “How to attract bees and butterflies to your garden with native plants” by Sharon Horgan
1:00 “Ten native plants needed to create a Native American school garden and curriculum—includes handouts” by Steve Wiley
More than sixty species of native plants, including monkeyflowers, flowering currants, yerba buena, native grape, St. Catherine’s lace, several types of manzanita, ferns, and fuchsia will be available in exchange for donations. Ask the volunteers to help you select plants that will do well in your garden! The plant list is here. Cash and checks only.
