PLEASANTON, Calif. — The San Francisco Bay Area's 17th Annual Bike to Work Day will take place on Thursday, May 12, 2011. Bike to Work Day is the premier bicycling event taking place in all of Northern California with all nine Bay Area counties participating in the celebration. The event is just one day of many events taking place in May as part of National Bike Month. Take the healthy commute and join thousands of Bay Area commuters as they bike to work or to transit.

NOTE: In 2010, over 420 riders came to the Energizer Station sponsored by Hacienda, the City of Pleasanton, the City of Dublin, Dublin Cyclery, the Alameda County Public Works Department and BART; one of the largest in the Bay Area.

Energizer Stations

On May 12th, Energizer Stations will be set up all over the Bay Area to celebrate Bike-to-Work Day. Hacienda is sponsoring an Energizer Station at the East Dublin/Pleasanton BART station in conjunction with the City of Pleasanton, the City of Dublin, Alameda County Public Works, Dublin Cyclery and BART. The first 400 cyclists to stop by the East Dublin/Pleasanton Energizer Station will receive a free Cycling Commute Companion; a canvas tote bag filled with great cycling gear and more. Participating cyclists can also receive a free bike safety check courtesy of Dublin Cyclery. Cyclists filling out a Bike to Work Day registration card will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win one of the many raffle prizes donated by local merchants. The Energizer Station will be open between 6:30 am and 9 am in the plaza area just outside the turnstiles. The East Dublin/Pleasanton BART station sits in the middle of Interstate 580 and is easily accessed by Owens Drive from Pleasanton and by Dublin Boulevard from Dublin.

Team Bike Challenge

Take the Team Bike Challenge and recruit friends, neighbors and co-workers to form teams of two to five individuals and win great prizes. The Team Bike Challenge kicks off on May 1st and continues throughout the month of May. Each individual member of the team earns points every day they use their bikes for transportation. The team with the most points in each county at the end of the Challenge will win prizes. To register, visit: www.youcanbikethere.com/tbc-signup.

Bike Commuter of the Year

The East Bay Bicycle Coalition announced the winners of the 2011 Bike Commuter of the Year on May 3rd. Details on the awardees can be found at the following location: www.ebbc.org/?q=bcoy. The East Bay Bicycle Coalition coordinates the Bike Commuter of the Year Awards to honor one resident from each county, who is committed to doing routine commutes by bike. The selection process, facilitated through peer nominations, targets avid cyclists who epitomize and actualize the health, environmental, social, and economic benefits of bicycling.

Bike Safety Class

Learn to drive a bike with a free urban bike safety class. Classes are being held throughout the Bay Area through May. This classroom course teaches street skills including the basics of safe cycling, riding in traffic, equipment, crash avoidance, rights and responsibility. A second day of instruction consists of a 6 hour on-road course to practice what was taught in the street skills class. For more information on these classes or to sign-up, please contact Dave Campbell at dcampbel@lmi.net or at the Berkeley Bikestation (510) 548-7433 or visit: www.ebbc.org/safety.

The Joseph Mendes Criterium

The East Bay Cyclists and InfoVista Cycling will be hosting a series of bike races on Saturday, June 11th in conjunction with Bike to Work Day. This all day event is being held just outside of Hacienda with a course consisting of a clockwise loop formed by Franklin and Johnson Drives. For more information on the race, visit: www.ebcyclist.org or contact Ron Castia at ron@ebcyclist.org.
