Businesses Improve Performance with Chabot-Las Positas' Training and Development Solutions

The training and development of employees is a company’s investment in the future success of its business. Maintaining an adequately trained workforce, whether it is with technical skills, interpersonal skills or for the purpose of complying with federally mandated requirements, can be challenging when searching for effective training programs. Fortunately for the businesses of the Tri-Valley, Training and Development Solutions (TDS) can help companies meet their training and development needs.

TDS, the corporate services division of the Chabot-Las Positas Community College District’s Contract Education department, has worked with businesses ranging from small to large corporations for over a decade, providing innovative, practical and cost-effective learning solutions.

“Organizations throughout the East Bay have successfully developed their workforces through the TDS approach,” says MariAnn Fisher, Marketing and Sales Manager for TDS. “We link training to business goals, build on distinctive characteristics and values of each organization, and deliver results.”

TDS works with businesses to find training solutions to help strengthen their effectiveness, competitiveness and profitability. “We are like a training and development broker,” explains Fisher. We meet with a company, conduct a needs assessment, determine the type of training needed and schedule classes in keeping with their work schedules and budget requirements. It’s our goal to be a company’s resource for all of their training needs.”

TDS contracts with instructors and subject-matter experts who are experienced and provide quality, interactive training. Training classes are held most often on-site at a company’s facilities, but can also be held on college campuses or at the computer lab at the TDS office in Pleasanton, located at 5020 Franklin Drive.

TDS offers a variety of courses and trainings for a vast array of clients in industries such as technology and manufacturing, but also city governments and public service groups like the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department. Courses range from office technology and software training, to leadership development and supervisory skills, customer service to emergency preparedness, industrial and manufacturing skills to hazardous materials training and quality technology.

“Some of our most popular courses are Excel and PowerPoint classes and the English as a Second Language classes,” explains Fisher. “The ESL classes have proven to be very effective in improving productivity and workplace communication, especially in the manufacturing and healthcare industries.” For example, TDS offers a Spanish course specifically for supervisors, teaching them how to communicate basic work concepts and get information from workers, helping them to achieve workplace goals. “Our Customer Service Training Program and the mandated courses on sexual harassment prevention and diversity awareness are also highly requested,” she notes.

There are many times when Fisher has worked with larger companies that know what training is needed but do not have an appropriate in-house program. In these cases, TDS’ courses can be customized to meet the specific needs of a company or augment existing in-house programs. “A good example of a customized course is a sexual harassment prevention course we delivered in Spanish,” adds Fisher.

Funding assistance for employee training is also available for qualifying California businesses.
