Sensiba San Filippo First California B Corp Accounting Firm

Sensiba San Filippo (SSF) LLP provides certified public accounting and business advisor services. More than a third of its clients have been with the firm for 10 years or more. For the third year in a row, SSF has been recognized with a Best of Accounting Award from ClearlyRated for providing excellent client service.

Moreover, thus far SSF is the first and only accounting firm in California to attain B Corporation certification. Certified B Corporations (B Corps) are businesses that have met the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose, according to Jennifer Cantero, Marketing Director. B Corps take an assessment that evaluates how they treat their employees, their customers, their community, the planet, and examines their governance as well. This assessment is then audited and verified by a third party nonprofit.

As a result of its experience as a B Corp, SSF will soon start a Business Sustainability and B Corp Certification practice. "We have seen so many benefits to becoming a certified B Corp that we would like to help others through the process or at least help them improve their sustainability and impact on their employees, community, and environment," says Cantero. "It quite literally pays to become a B Corp. Many B Corps report that the certification process helps them root out waste and operational inefficiencies. In a report published by the Yale Center for Business, B Corporations were 63 percent more likely to survive a financial crisis like that in 2008 than traditional small to medium size businesses."

Naturally SSF will continue to provide the many other services that have built its popularity among clients, while continuing to take a leadership role in the industry. "The accounting industry is going through a huge disruption right now," notes Cantero. "Exciting new technology, like artificial intelligence and blockchain, is changing the way we do business. Our entire industry is shifting from a compliance-based model to a more consulting and advisory model. These new technology tools will allow our accountants to focus less on the administrative, data-entry side of their jobs and more on the relationship building and advising part. It will be much more rewarding and valuable for our accountants and our clients."

As a client, one of the best ways to get excellent service is to build a relationship with your accountant, according to Cantero. "Accounting is not just a once a year thing. If you take the time to build a relationship with your accountant, it will help you plan your financial life. The more you plan, the fewer worries you will have and better information you'll have at your fingertips to make sound decisions for your future. Also, if you have big life changes, don't forget to loop in your CPA. They might have some great ideas to contribute that can save you money down the road."

SSF moved to Hacienda in July 2015 when it needed more space, and the firm continues to grow. In addition to its Hacienda headquarters, SSF also has offices in San Francisco, San Mateo, San Jose, Morgan Hill, and Fresno. Its largest office, at Hacienda, is home to five partners and about 50 staff members. The firm has 17 partners and 180 staff members in total.

The firm invites Hacienda companies to attend its annual Executive Breakfast Briefing, which will be held on August 15, 2019. The briefing will cover important updates and end of the year planning for both businesses and individuals. For those who cannot attend in person, the briefing will also be available through a live webinar. Those interested can register on the company website closer to the event.
