Degreed's Learning Platform Builds Needed Employee Skills

Degreed is a lifelong learning platform that is helping more than 4 million people at more than 250 organizations build the skills they need to invent the future. Degreed creates experts by allowing users to build valuable skill sets. That benefit, coupled with best-in-class customer support, keeps existing customers loyal and draws in new clients. Degreed signed up more than 100 new clients globally in 2019. Clients include such major organizations as Cisco, ebay, Harvard Business Publishing, Whirlpool, and Unilever.

"Our mission is to ensure that no one becomes obsolete in their career over time," says CEO Chris McCarthy, who has been with the company since 2013. "We want to make learning and skill-building simple, measurable, and continuous-a core component of all businesses. By doing so, employees will truly become a company's best asset and future-proof businesses against tomorrow's challenges."

Degreed constantly innovates to make sure its product is unparalleled. It offers the best learning platform, one that is flexible to user needs, intuitive, and has a social media-like functionality that inspires learning and sharing. One offering, Degreed Skill Certification, uses expert analysts and trainings to certify people in more than 100 marketable skills. Degreed Skill Certification is just one of many ways the company helps people build new skills and provide tangible evidence of what they have learned to improve their careers.

Tenaris deployed the Degreed learning platform to modernize its employee training and learning management system. The company, a global manufacturer and supplier of steel pipes and related services, has nearly 23,700 employees around the world. Moving to Degreed allowed onboarding employees and those switching roles to complete training themselves online. Using Degreed's platform allowed Tenaris to save more than 15 hours of employee time for each new employee and a day and a half for employees moving internally.

"We view education as a living, career-long process, and we practice what we preach," notes McCarthy. "At Degreed, we give our employees a monthly subsidy dedicated to ongoing education and improving skills. We all use Degreed for team-based sharing and expertise-building. We believe experts are made in-house and empower our people to grow where they are passionate, map skills to internal skill-gaps, and align upskilling tracks to career advancement opportunities."

Degreed has seen an explosion of growth in the past several years, which has led to a huge increase in its employee workforce. That includes a large remote workforce, as well as staff at offices in New York City, Salt Lake City, and Leiden, The Netherlands. Roughly 30 employees work at Degreed's Hacienda office. Originally headquartered in San Francisco, a majority of Degreed employees now reside outside of the city, which prompted Degreed's move out of San Francisco.

"This past summer we moved to Hacienda because the beautiful workspace is larger and more accessible to most of our Bay Area-based employees," says McCarthy. "Our new Hacienda location acts as our main headquarters."

Small businesses and individuals can also benefit from Degreed's offerings, according to McCarthy. Anyone can start honing skills and becoming an expert in whatever topic interests them through Degreed's unlimited learning content via its free consumer portal. The content includes courses from universities, podcasts, YouTube videos, articles, and more.
