WALK FOR THE GOLD

Walk for the Gold is one of the premier events for Special Olympics Northern California. This non-competitive 3k walk, to be held at Hacienda on Saturday, October 16 at 10:00 am, will bring together participants of all ages throughout the Tri-Valley community to promote the spirit of friendship and fitness. Walkers raise money and earn incentive prizes by asking friends, family, co-workers and people they do business with to sponsor them. Funds are also raised through sponsorships, matching gifts and other corporate contributions.

Corporate Community Participation

The event begins with the corporate community, but it does not stop there. Employees' families and friends, Special Olympics athletes, coaches, families and even the general public can participate. Special Olympics athletes representing 13 different sports join walkers in the Walk. Corporate teams have the opportunity to adopt a Special Olympics athlete or team and walk with them at the event. Immediately following the Walk there will be a Special Olympics Unified Sports Softball game. Company Leaders and Team Captains recruit and register walkers. A team consists of ten walkers for every 30 employees in a company. Each Walk participant is asked to collect a minimum of $100 in donations and will receive refreshments, a goody bag and will have the opportunity to win prizes.

Benefits for SONC

The Walk for the Gold goal is to raise $70,000 for Special Olympics Northern California (SONC), East Bay Region. Special Olympics programs are not federally funded and are entirely free to participants. Training and competitions exist because of the generous support of businesses and individuals. More than 1,200 athletes participate in the East Bay, which provides year round sports training and competition in 22 Olympic-type sports for children and adults with developmental disabilities.
