ECO DISPOSAL GUIDELINES FOR BUSINESSES AND MULTI-FAMILY PROPERTIES

The Alameda County Waste Management Authority is striving to increase awareness of the Mandatory Recycling Ordinance which became effective January 1, 2018. The Mandatory Recycling Ordinance is a law that prohibits the disposal of certain readily recyclable materials. It requires affected businesses and multi-family property owners in Alameda County to provide on-site recycling and organics collection services to handle the amount of recyclable material and compostable material (food scraps and compostable paper) produced at those locations. The Alameda County Waste Management Authority is a public agency formed in 1976 by a Joint Exercise of Powers Agreement among the County of Alameda, each of the fourteen cities in the county, and two sanitary districts that provide refuse and recycling collection services.

Overview

The Alameda County Waste Management Authority Mandatory Recycling Ordinance requires businesses, institutions and multi-family properties with five or more units to sort their recyclables from their trash. Multi-family property owners as well as businesses and institutions that generate food waste, such as restaurants and grocery stores, must also sort compostables from their trash. The ordinance requires the recycling services provided to be sufficient to handle the amount of recyclable materials collected and the composting collection service to be sufficient to handle the amount of food scraps and food-soiled paper generated at the location. Recyclables covered under the ordinance include: cardboard, newspaper, white paper, mixed recyclable paper, recyclable glass food and beverage containers, metal (aluminum and steel) food and beverage containers, PET (#1) and HDPE (#2) plastic bottles, food scraps and compostable paper.
