Revolutionary IrisVision Helps People with Low Vision See Clearly

IrisVision is a venture capital backed medtech startup that has created a revolutionary new product improving the lives of many people around the world. Built on the most advanced mobile virtual reality (VR) platform, the IrisVision product allows people with low vision conditions such as macular degeneration to see clearly in daily life with an industry-leading 70 degree field of view.

"Our product, IrisVision, allows legally blind people to see once again," says Ammad Khan, Cofounder and CEO of IrisVision. "Based on a virtual reality platform, it empowers our users to perform visual tasks that they were unable to do."

Traditional low vision aids such as closed circuit TVs or handheld magnifiers allow users to see better when performing a specific task or activity. Such devices are helpful for situations such as reading at your desk or examining something within arm's reach. One of their drawbacks, however, is that they keep users tethered to one place.

In contrast, the IrisVision product is built for mobility. Users wear a Samsung Gear VR headset outfitted with a Samsung Galaxy smartphone, which captures scenes with its camera. The IrisVision's proprietary software enhances each scene to make it more visible for those with low vision.

A variety of features make help users see scenes more clearly. Those features include the ability to change image brightness, color contrast, zoomed area, and magnification. The IrisVision device also allows users to choose from reading modes that include high contrast white letters on a black background or black on white to make text more visible.

The IrisVision product lets users see clearly and live fully. It is the most medically-validated wearable low vision aid available today, according to the company. It was developed with support from low vision experts at the most prestigious vision institutions in the world as well as grants from the National Eye Institute.

"IrisVision is building a universal vision care platform," notes Khan. "Our mission is to help millions of vision-impaired people around the world and serve them with the best vision research combined with top technology solutions."

One of the many users benefitting from the IrisVision product is an 82-year-old Navy veteran named Ronald Sand. Sand lost most of his vision over the past five or so years, according to Khan. A few months ago the veteran started wearing an IrisVision headset, and "now he is able to do all of the things that he couldn't do anymore such as getting out of the house, working in his workshop, and seeing his family and friends."

The IrisVision product got started in Pleasanton in 2015. The company moved to Hacienda in 2017 because of its location and because it is business friendly. The company has a small but rapidly growing team working at its headquarters in Hacienda, with several other employees working from remote offices around the country.

"We started building this product right here in Pleasanton, and our product is now being recognized by top eye institutes and has been featured by Samsung at top technology conferences, including a recent event at the Vatican City," says Khan.
