Expanding Your Horizons in Math and Science

The eighth annual "Expanding Your Horizons in Math and Science" career conference for sixth through twelfth grade girls will be held on March 15 at Chabot College Valley Campus.

The conference is aimed at encouraging young women to pursue studies in science and math so that a variety of career opportunities will be open to them.

Even today, young women do not enter math and science studies in the same numbers boys do. In many instances, girls are discouraged from taking math and science courses. This despite the fact that requirements for university entrance have been increased to three years of math coursework.

The "Expanding Your Horizons" conference was started at Mills College ten years ago. Last year, there were over seventy such conferences held world-wide with over 15,000 students participating.

The keynote speaker for the day-long conference will be Barbara Millard. Ms. Millard is former President and Chief Operating officer of Computerland Corporation and is now President of IMS Associates, Inc.

A special feature of the conference will be a panel discussion on "Lifestyles." The six guest panelists will discuss the choices they have made regarding career, marriage and children.

The young women attending the conference will have an opportunity to meet in small groups with working women. The groups will discuss jobs, work environments and training.

The conference is sponsored by several local companies including Apple Computer, The Clorox Company, Hacienda Business Park Owners Association and by the Society of Women Engineers, American Association of University Women and other national sponsors.

Registration forms are available through the math and science departments of local middle and high schools and at local libraries. The registration fee is $5 and registration must be completed by March 5. Registration is limited to 350.
