Las Positas College Foundation Fosters Student Success

The Las Positas College Foundation (LPCF) was created nearly 20 years ago to support Las Positas College through philanthropic support. Tax-deductible donations made to the nonprofit foundation helps bridge the gap between available public funding and institutional need for the college and its students. According to LPCF officials, the foundation has been able to provide "hundreds of thousands of dollars annually for student success programs, scholarships, book grants, and other critical needs" as students "prepare for careers, transfer to four-year institutions, and pursue lifelong learning goals and dreams."

The mission of the Las Positas College Foundation is to support and advance Las Positas College and its students through active resource development and effective community partnerships. "The foundation believes that an affordable, high-quality education is critical to the success of the Tri-Valley region," says Executive Director Kenneth Cooper. The foundation's values include stewardship, community collaboration, and innovation. "The students and community we serve and the leadership from our Board of Directors make us truly special. Las Positas College is a center of excellence in the Tri-Valley and the foundation is grateful to help provide critical resources in support of student success."

The Las Positas College Foundation's Annual Fund allows LPCF to meet the most critical unmet needs of its campus community, according to Cooper. "These unrestricted gifts, when combined, give us much-needed flexibility that the past two years have shown us is very important. Having the ability to meet needs as they arise helps us remove barriers to student success."

Over the past two years, for example, the LPCF has helped students affected by the pandemic by providing critical resources such as access to Internet service and equipment for students learning remotely, support for purchasing textbooks, and grant dollars for programs. LPCF stepped up to meet these unexpected needs while continuing to provide more than $300,000 in scholarships to deserving students in the Tri-Valley area.

As well as providing financial support through donations, LPCF also works to collaborate with local businesses and organizations in support of Las Positas  students, the campus, and the college mission. "Our community is home to a diverse array of innovation, industry, and expertise," notes Cooper. "The Las Positas College Foundation is happy to serve as a connector between the college and community." LPCF also serves as a connector to Las Positas College alumni through the LPC Alumni Association. "LPC graduates can be found in a variety of careers and professions. We want to make sure that the college can stay in touch with them and hear about the impact they're making in the community."

In addition to its other activities, LPCF has partnered with the President's Office at Las Positas on the President's Speakers Series. The program brings noted presenters with thought-provoking conversation to the campus community throughout the year.  "We welcome inquiries about this and other sponsorship and collaboration opportunities," says Cooper. "As the campus emerges from the Covid-related shut-down, the foundation looks forward to hosting visits and receptions once again."
