CityServe Aids Tri-Valley Seniors, Others

In 2022, Senior Support of the Tri-Valley merged with CityServe of the Tri-Valley, a nonprofit established in 2009. At the time, CityServe programs supported an estimated 2,000 Tri-Valley residents of all ages. As a result of the merger, it added the programs and staff from Senior Support, which supported some "2,000 people 60 and over with food and shelter assistance, financial counseling, vocational training, legal guidance, and help with medical, dental, and behavioral health needs," according to Larry Altman writing in The Independent. Since the merger, the combined CityServe has continued working to aid Tri-Valley residents in need.

"CityServe takes the guesswork out of the human services maze," say CityServe officials. "Think of CityServe as a starting point when you or someone you know doesn't even know where to begin looking for services. We recognize it can often be an overwhelming process for individuals in crisis. Our services start with the individual. Before we can determine a program, referral, class or care plan, we want to hear the story. Everyone has a unique story and we understand when we serve our community no two stories are the same. That is why our foundation is a care model that brings the 'human' into the human services. The care and compassion we offer through our volunteer base, team of care coordinators, and health educators are the reason Dublin, Livermore, and Pleasanton have asked us to step into the gap to help residents connect all the dots."

The nonprofit's services for older adults are designed to "foster independence, promote safety and wellbeing, preserve dignity, create community, and improve quality of life." Toward that end, senior programs include Caregiver Support, 60+ Care Coordination, Senior Counseling, VAST Transportation, Finding Wellness, Care Advocacy, Medication Safety, Fall Prevention, and Caring Visitors. Caregiver Support, for example, includes a monthly in-person support group and weekly video support group meetings.

The nonprofit's 60+ Care Coordination program provides a holistic approach to serving individuals in crisis and coaching them through the process of stabilization, according to officials, who note that eligible individuals can enroll by phone, email, or in person at the Pleasanton Senior Care Center. Each program participant is given care based upon their specific needs and goals. That may include help with getting transportation to medical appointments, meals and food, housing, in-home support, applying for Medi-Cal or Supplemental Security Income, visits from volunteers, and more.

Bingocise Fitness Classes from CityServe is an evidence-based program for seniors that "combines bingo, fall prevention exercises, and nutritional education to improve one's overall health and wellness," according to officials. Each class in the 10-week program meets twice a week for 60 minutes. Other programs serving seniors include the LIFE program (Lifestyle approaches to reducing Falls through Exercise) and Home Modification. The LIFE Program helps older adults reduce their risk of falls by teaching them how to integrate balance and strength activities into regular everyday tasks. In the Home Modification program, experts assess the needs of older adults living at home and provide "minor home modifications and repairs in order to meet safety, health issues, and code standards."

At its Multi-Service Center in Livermore, CityServe provides a full range of services to sheltered and unsheltered individuals under the age of 60. However, only limited services are available to seniors at this location. The complete CityServe senior service programs are provided at the Pleasanton Senior Center. Many services can be accessed by calling or via email. Volunteers are also welcome to contact the organization.
