Pleasanton’s Premier Public Venues Host Many Adult Sports

The City of Pleasanton is home to a variety of remarkable public sporting facilities and ample opportunities to participate in adult sports and physical activities. The Ken Mercer Sports Park, beautiful Callippe Preserve Golf Course, and top-class Dolores Bengtson Aquatic Center are examples of the excellent public facilities available in Pleasanton.

  • Ken Mercer Sports Park

5800 Parkside Drive, (925) 931-3437, www.cityofpleasantonca.gov/your-community/recreation/sports-athletic-field-rentals

The Ken Mercer Sports Park, also known as the Pleasanton Sports Park, is the most prominent sports venue in the city. It features more than 100 acres of green space, and its playing fields can be configured in up to 12 soccer fields, four adult softball fields, and 21 additional baseball and Little League diamonds. It also has designated areas for basketball and volleyball, as well as a skateboard track and 2.5-mile walking path. There are restrooms, a concession area, and places for picnics. This is the top location for playing many popular adult sports, and it hosts a number of sports teams, which rent playing fields for their use.

Pleasanton Adult Sunday Soccer (PASS), for example, usually plays at the Sports Park. This coed, recreational soccer league welcomes players of all abilities and emphasizes enjoying the game and meeting new people. PASS plays two 12-game seasons a year. The Spring season runs from March to June, and the Fall season from September to December. PASS has fielded approximately 16-20 teams per season. PASS is part of the Pleasanton Ballistic United Soccer Club, which has a primary focus on youth soccer. Players can register for a team or as a free agent. PASS is accepting registrations now for the Fall 2025 season. For more details, visit https://busc.org/pleasanton-adult-sunday-soccer-pass.

Golfers, bocce enthusiasts, and pickleball players can find great places to play within city limits. Swimmers and other sports enthusiasts will also find attractive venues where they can practice and enjoy their favorite activities.

  • Callippe Preserve Golf Course

8500 Clubhouse Drive, (925) 426-6666, www.playcallippe.com

Callippe Preserve, the city's municipally owned and public golf course, offers an outstanding 18-hole, par 72 sporting experience. "Our goal was to have the course reward the thinking golfer where length and power are not the most critical skills required to play the course well," according to Brian Costello, the Callippe Preserve Architect. "The layout encourages strategic course management and creative shot making from tee to green."

Pleasanton's premier golf facility opened in 2005. Set in the foothills on the south edge of the city, the course makes the most of its spectacular setting. The front nine holes are routed through the valley, while the back nine sit at a higher elevation; Happy Valley Creek winds throughout the course. Facilities include a driving range and a clubhouse with a pro shop and restaurant. Lessons for both adults and juniors are available.

A variety of golf clubs call Callippe Preserve home. They include the Callippe Niners Women's Golf Club, who describe themselves as a "fun group of ladies who play nine holes every Tuesday." The Callippe Women's 18 Hole Golf Club also plays there, as well as a Spark Golf league. Spark Golf leagues are nine-hole, "social golf leagues that are played under a relaxed set of rules to make the experience casual and fun with a touch of friendly competition," officials say.

  • Centennial Park

5353 Sunol Boulevard, (925) 931-5340

Two bocce courts are located next to the Pleasanton Senior Center in Centennial Park. Bocce, which developed from games that originated in the Roman Empire and comes from the Italian word for bowls, involves rolling balls down a court towards a smaller, target ball. Usually played outdoors, the sport has grown in popularity in recent years thanks in part to its all-ages appeal. These courts are open for drop-in play and also can be rented for specific occasions.

  • Dolores Bengtson Aquatic Center

4455 Black Avenue, (925) 931-3420, www.cityofpleasantonca.gov/your-community/recreation/aquatics

Pleasanton's premiere aquatic facility features a 50-meter Olympic-size pool, shallow pool with waterslide, recently renovated 25-meter lap pool, diving well, two 1-meter diving boards, and plenty of turf for picnics and lounging poolside. Pools are heated to 80 degrees year-round. The facility is compliant with ADA accessibility standards. It is also equipped with plenty of parking, lockers for swimmers who bring their own locks, and shower facilities. Passes to the Aquatic Center are required to use the pools.

The Aquatic Center offers two water-exercise classes. The high intensity shallow-water aerobics class is designed for intermediate to advanced exercisers to strengthen muscles and improve cardiovascular fitness. Includes interval, circuit and resistance training using hand buoys, elastic tubing and water goggles. The challenging deep water aerobic workout utilizes interval and resistance training to develop cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength, endurance, and flexibility. Saturday swim lessons are single-day classes based on the American Red Cross Parent/Child Aquatics, Preschool Aquatics, Learn-to-Swim, and Adult Swim programs for swimmers who want extra practice to advance to the next level or become more comfortable in the water.

The Tri-Valley Masters Swim Team practices year-round at the Aquatic Center. Part of the U.S. Masters Swimming organization, the group offers coached workouts every week at the Aquatic Center and Las Positas College. To join, prospective members must be 18 or older and, ideally, have an interest in fitness or competitive swimming.
