Performant Healthcare, Inc. supports healthcare payers in identifying, preventing and recovering waste and improper payments by leveraging advanced technology, analytics and proprietary data assets. The company works with leading national and regional healthcare payers to provide eligibility-based, also known as coordination-of-benefits services, as well as claims-based services, which include audit and identification of improperly paid claims. Performant is a leading provider of these services in both government and commercial healthcare markets. Performant also provides advanced reporting capabilities, support services, customer care, and stakeholder training programs designed to mitigate future instances of improper payments.
Earlier this year, the company announced the results of a targeted survey of nearly 150 healthcare technology leaders it had conducted to better understand the key drivers behind healthcare technology decision-making. The findings point to a healthcare landscape increasingly shaped by innovation, efficiency, and the imperative to deliver better outcomes for patients. An overwhelming 77% of healthcare technology leaders indicated that Al and machine learning make up the number one area they expect to impact healthcare in the next five years.
Other key findings include that 61.5% of respondents indicated their top priority for healthcare technology was improving patient outcomes, followed by enhancing operational efficiency (56.8%), and adopting innovative, cutting-edge solutions (55.4%). Just over 35% of respondents expect electronic health records and interoperability to have the greatest impact on healthcare over the next five years. Respondents said important factors in selecting healthcare technology vendors include product reliability, strong customer support, and compliance with industry standards and regulations.
These results highlight a healthcare sector in transformation, one that is prioritizing innovation and outcomes while balancing pressure to reduce waste and maximize impact. The survey results come at a time when the broader healthcare system is under unprecedented scrutiny. According to a recent U.S. Government Accountability Office report, in fiscal year 2024, 16 federal agencies identified $162 billion in improper payments across 68 programs, more than 50% of which were in healthcare. This does not include payments classified as fraud.
"The size and scope of this problem is staggering," according to Performant CEO Simeon Kohl, who adds that "the reality is that fraud, waste and abuse has caused hundreds of billions of dollars of waste that could otherwise support patient care, health equity, and long-term system resilience."
With a proven track record of uncovering more than $1.3 billion in savings for the Medicare trust fund during the past three years, Performant plays a critical role in protecting healthcare funding at scale. "The survey confirms what we're seeing in the market: healthcare organizations are prioritizing technology that drives meaningful, measurable, quality results," according to Christian Bass, Senior Vice President for Payment Integrity at Performant, which opened an office at Hacienda in October 2023.
Grant Kordash, Performant Senior Vice President for Technology, notes, "By identifying patterns and trends within large data sets, AI and machine learning can help optimize payment processes, reduce errors, and enhance overall efficiency. As we look to the future, leveraging AI and machine learning will be core to our strategy centered on innovation and client results."
As the healthcare industry continues to digitize and evolve, Performant is committed to equipping payers, providers, and government agencies with the tools needed to safeguard every dollar. "Innovation isn't just about the next big thing, it's about solving big problems," says Amanda Purvis, Performant Senior Vice President for Product Innovation. "By combining powerful data analytics, AI-driven workflows and decades of expertise, we're helping clients tackle the very real financial inefficiencies plaguing the U.S. healthcare system. That's the future we're building."
