Winbond Electronics Corporation, which is headquartered in Taiwan, provides customer-driven memory solutions backed by the expert capabilities of product design, research and development, manufacturing, and sales services. The company’s memory product portfolio is widely used by customers in communication, consumer electronics, automotive and industrial, and computer peripheral markets. In September, officials announced that the corporation’s Kaohsiung Fab had been honored with the Silver Award at the Seventh National Enterprise Environmental Protection Award, Taiwan’s highest accolade for corporate environmental excellence, hosted by the Ministry of Environment.
The award marks Winbond’s first participation in the program, with recognition granted for initiatives such as Digital Transformation Empowerment, Low-Carbon Supply Chain Resilience, and the Water-Saving and Carbon-Reduction System. The award underscores Winbond’s commitment and capability to enrich human life through sustainable semiconductors, officials say. In 2024, Winbond introduced a pioneering carbon accounting system. The system extended traditional accounting principles to track carbon emissions across the entire production lifecycle, including in-house wafer fabrications as well as all processes at Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test facilities, which allowed Winbond to automate and standardize carbon data. To support its supply chain partners in setting carbon reduction targets, Winbond has implemented product carbon footprint assessments and benefit audits and joined the Partnership for Carbon Transparency to promote standardized, transparent, and data-driven carbon disclosures.
Since its establishment, the Kaohsiung Fab has adopted high-efficiency chillers, optimized operating parameters, and introduced real-time variable temperature and flow control. By leveraging big data and machine learning, the Fab has continuously improved system performance, achieving a 12.5% reduction in energy consumption since 2022. In air pollution prevention, the Fab has deployed high-efficiency control facilities for volatile organic compounds and heat recovery systems, resulting in a 53% improvement in energy efficiency since operations began through the application of data science. In terms of resource recycling, the Fab built a waste sulfuric acid recovery system, partly supplying acid to its ammonia-nitrogen wastewater treatment system. Through system optimization, the Fab has reduced waste disposal volume by 50% since 2023, turning waste into valuable resources and advancing environmental sustainability.
The Silver Award bestowed upon Winbond recognizes Kaohsiung Fab’s long-standing commitment to green semiconductor technologies and sustainable development. Looking ahead, Winbond will continue to drive innovation, strengthen carbon management, expand the use of renewable energy, and work alongside global customers and supply chain partners to build a low-carbon, sustainable semiconductor industry. Winbond officials say they firmly believe that green technology is not only a driver of corporate transformation but also a cornerstone for safeguarding the planet and enriching human life.
